10 Keyword Selection Mistakes in Adwords
When it comes to Adwords,initially most of the people absolutely get it wrong.There is no Wrong in it either..Not Long time Ago,i was too doing the same mistakes,that costed me my Hard Earned Money.When you have 1000$ and losing 100$ is not a big task,but when you’re left with just 100$ and losing 75$ for nothing is a lot terrible than you think..I’ve been in that position and i learned some the lessons the hard way.(losing Money Unnecessarily).But i’ve been also a bit smart to learn from some of the TOP Adwords Marketers and apply them immediately.and on the way the most common mistakes that Most People do ,due to Misleading are:
1.Selecting a Deep Keyword list in the start:
This one thing is a huge.”Selecting Keywords”.Every First time Adword Advertiser commit this mistake.As a general rule this is what happens when anyone is choosing keyword for adword advertising.Go to Google Keyword tool or any other Favourite keyword tool and Start Searching with the Primary Keyword.and with the resulting keyword list (which obviously is the different representations of Primary Keyword),the adword campaign is built and traffic is sent to the page.and guess what…Rarely any of the topic gets converted…Then upon spending lot of money and time,its decided that the market is saturated and start looking for another market…SOUNDS Familiar…

2.Not Using Negative Keywords Properly:
Negative Keywords:one of the most under utilised feature of Ad words,yet using this one single thing properly can get you a lot more targeted Traffic and in turn a lot more conversion.The way Mostly this feature is used is as choosing some the generic terms like.FREE,NUDE,SEX,ADULT,..etc..etc and using them as negative keywords in the campaigns,so that when these keywords occur in the search box,the ads gets triggered..It is Good,but can it be taken a lil bit further..
Surely whatever keyword you think is not relevant or misleading in your keyword list,use them too as negative keywords.can this make a huge difference? for me it did for increasing my CTR massively.Can it be taken to Next level? surely..here is how.
3.Not Considering the Commercial intention of Keywords:
Does the Keywords have any Commercial Intention? YES..Absolutely..Imagine a Buyer who is ready to buy a product is searching for the product and a casual information seeker searching for an information..will they be entering entirely radically different Search terms in the search box? If that is the case will it make more sense to target only the buyers when we are selling the products and treat the shoppers in a totally different way.For me it is an Obsolute No Brainer..
So do you think if we choose only the keywords that has the commerical intention of 0.6 or above using the Microsoft’s Commercial Intention tool,which is obviously free and direct that traffic to the site,will it have lor more Convertions..? i Guess you know the answer.
4.Choosing Large Number of Keywords in an Adgroup:
This is a Very common Mistake that could get very very average results.When you choose a large set of keywords and get them to land on a single page,that means the focus of the page gets diluted.the Page can’t be obviously optimized for all those keyword combinations and it may alert google to choose that the page is not targeted for the campaigns and hence the quality score is dramatically decreased and Cost Per Conversion (CPC) greatly increases..
Ex:Choosing Walking Shoes,Jogging Shoes in one single campaign will not provide good results
The Much More Efficient way would be to Choose one Keyword per page/closely related 3-4 keywords per page,by which the page is actually Laser Targeted and hence the Quality Score Increases and hence the Cost Per Conversion Decreases a lot.
5.Not Considering the SEO Perspective:
What do you think is GOOGLE’s aim for making the strict regulations in Quality score.It obviously wants to direct its users to a much targeted page.so if we optimise the site for a set of targeted keywords and let google know that our site is exactly the one what customers are searching for and then use it in line with google adwords,will it have any effect..I’ve tested and the results are nothing less than spectacular..the site is totaly optimised for the keywords and with right combination of adwords ad,you could have just got the vein of a golden mine.
6.Reducing the Bid Rate Faster:
This could be a Very Familiar Scenario.Lets say for Example,you choose a Product to Promote and choose 0.25 cents as CPC and you got 1000 Clicks which made 4 sales.On seeing this,you wish to reduce you CPC and reduced it to 0.1 cents and let it got for a while for 1000 Clicks but with No Sales.so you thought it is just a bad day and let the campaign go for another 1000 clicks and that too resulted in No Sales.

so you Conclude the market is saturated and hence move to next product having spent 200$ unnecessarily for a Product with no Convertions.
What had Happened is when you choose 0.25 Cents,your ad could be in a higher position say 2-4 and hence brought you couple of sales and when you reduced it to 0.1 Cent the ad could have possibly moved to second page and hence would have got the clicks but the traffic is not quality enough for higher convertions and hence No Sales resulted.
7.Not Going Deep once a Winner is Identified:
Once a winning Product is identified,what most people used to do is to move on to figure out another Winning Product.But it is equivalent to leaving a lot of Free Money in the table.Once you’ve identified the Winning Product,take some time to analyze the market and build a business across that market and thereby you drill deep into the market and pile up all the money.
8.Combining Content & Search Networks:
As you might aware,Content Network displays ads in Partner Websites through Google ad sense Program and Search Network Displays ads at Top and Right Sidebar in Search results page.Choosing to display ads in both the networks could be a Great disaster as both works entirely different way.Remeber People who enter search terms in Google page look for some kind of products to buy and that can be monetised.But when the ads are displayed in the Content Network,it is usually displayed in a site with lot of content and henceforth people could be just casually browsing and hence monetising them would involve a different strategy.
When both are combined ,it could seriously affect the conversions and also the Quality Score of the Adwords Ads.
9.Not Choosing theme of Keywords for Content Network:
It is equally destrctive,when individual or just a few keywords are used in campaigns in Content Network.
Content Network works entirely in a different way and it in simple sense,equates the theme of the website conten with the theme of the keywords you have in adwords campaign.and if they are not tightly relevant,then that may be a start of a cash trap.
To get an understanding of how google views a page’s keywords,choose a webpage in your niche and use it to generate keywords in the Keyword Selection Tool using website content. you can see a theme of keywords getting generated around the webpage.
While Choosing keywords for Content Networks,Choose a Theme of Keywords,instead of individual keywords.Also use Tightly relevant Synonyms of the keywords which will give google clue about the Theme of the website.
10.Not Testing the Convertions to retain Keywords in Campaigns:
This one is Huge.When it comes to Adwords,Track Everything.Track from Convertion to keywords to Quality score to Ad Position to almost everything.Use google Analytics inline with Adwords to Track the Ad Performance.
Track Every Aspect of Ad and Choose the Winner and Start Bidding more on the winner.If you find that a keyword is getting lot of convertions and some others donot,stop bidding on the Non-Converting Keywords and Increase you Bid on the Converting Keywords and also additionally Choose Deep list of keywords of the Converting Keywords and Start Testing it.This could make a serious Improvement in the Ad Performance and hence the Profits.Check this way of Tracking your Adwords Efficiently without cutting your Profits.
